Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French réticule.
Etymology: < French réticule grid of threads in an optical instrument (1682), the constellation Reticulum (see reticulum n.), kind of handbag (1800 as ridicule : see ridicule n.2) < classical Latin rēticulum small meshwork bag, small net (see reticulum n.). With sense 2 compare slightly earlier ridicule n.2
