Etymology: < bio- comb. form + chemistry n., after biochemical adj. Compare German Biochemie (1813 or earlier), French biochimie (1838). Compare slightly earlier biochemist n. In sense 2 after German Biochemie (Schüssler 1881, in the work translated in quot. 1881).
1. The branch of science concerned with the chemical substances, reactions, and physico-chemical processes which occur within living organisms; biological or physiological chemistry. Also: the chemical substances and processes of this kind.
