Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian reticello.
Etymology: < Italian reticello reticella lace (a1557), mesh pattern as a kind of glass decoration (1587 or earlier), specific uses of reticello small net (14th or 15th cent.) < rete net (see rete n.) + -cello , diminutive suffix (see -ello suffix). With reticello glass at sense 1a compare vetri..a reticelli (1587 or earlier). Compare slightly earlier reticella n.In form reticelli after the Italian plural form. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the pronunciation (retitʃe·lo) /retiˈtʃɛllo/.
