Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the second syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. retuso-conical Brit. /rᵻˌtjuːsəʊˈkɒnᵻkl/, /rᵻˌtʃuːsəʊˈkɒnᵻkl/, U.S. /rəˌt(j)uzoʊˈkɑnək(ə)l/.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: retuse adj., -o- connective.
Etymology: < retuse adj. + -o- connective.Found in a small number of formations, all zoological terms, from the early 19th cent. Combining with second elements ultimately of Latin origin.
Zoology. Now rare.
