Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French retroussé, retrousser.
Etymology: < French retroussé turned up, curving upward (1636 in nez retroussé turned up nose; 1558 in Middle French with reference to a person's belly), transferred use as adjective of past participle of retrousser to hitch up (a garment) (1530 in Middle French; 1552 in sense ‘(of a garment) to be hitched up’, used reflexively; c1200 in Old French in sense ‘to load or burden again’) < re- re- prefix + trousser truss v.The use as noun is not paralleled in French. N.E.D. (1908) only gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (rətruse) /rətruse/.
