Etymology: < post-classical Latin retrospicient-, retrospiciens, present participle of retrospicere (see retrospect v.), probably after post-classical Latin respiciens retro ‘looking back’ (Vulgate: Luke 9:62). Compare retrospicient adj. With the β. forms compare -ant suffix1.
Scottish. Obsolete.
A person who looks back. In extended use: a person who turns his or her back on something; an apostate.Frequently with reference to Luke 9:62.
