Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin retrospectus , retrospicere ; retro- prefix, conspectus n., prospectus n.
Etymology: Partly < post-classical Latin retrospectus, past participle of retrospicere to look back (see retrospect v.), and partly (in later use) < retro- prefix + -spectus (in conspectus n., prospectus n.). Compare earlier retrospect n., retrospection n.
A retrospective review or summary; = retrospect n. 2b.The works referred to in quot. 1897 are actually titled Retrospections of the Stage (1830) and Retrospections of America (1887).
