restraining order n. Law an order made by a court, judge, etc., restricting or prohibiting a party from carrying out a particular course of action; spec. (a) a temporary order issued without notice, intended to maintain an existing situation whilst an application for an injunction is being considered; (b) an order prohibiting one individual from approaching, contacting, or (in cases of domestic violence) harassing or threatening another.
