Etymology: In quot. 1571 < restrain v.1 + -ed suffix1 + -ness suffix. In later use < restrained adj. + -ness suffix. Compare slightly earlier restrainedly adv. Compare also earlier restraint n., restrain n.
The quality or state of being restrained.Apparently unattested in the 17th and 18th centuries.
