Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Restio.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Restio, genus name ( C. F. Rottbøll Descriptiones plantarum rariorum (1772) 9, after earlier use in a different sense by Linnaeus Systema naturæ ed. 12 (1767) II. 735) < classical Latin restiōn- , restiō dealer in rope < restis rope (see restiform adj.) + -iō -ion suffix1.
Any of various reed-like plants of, or formerly of, the genus Restio (family Restionaceae), superficially resembling horsetails, chiefly native to southern Africa, where they are used for thatching and broom-making, and grown elsewhere for their ornamental foliage. Also (in form Restio): the genus itself.
