Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: rest n.2, rest v.2, harrow n.1
Etymology: < either rest n.2 or rest v.2 + harrow n.1 (see e.g. quots. 1567, 1718). Compare earlier restelbowe n., and the post-classical Latin and Anglo-Norman forms cited at that entry.
Any of various small perennial shrubs constituting the chiefly European genus Ononis (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)), having prostrate woody stems and tough roots; esp. (more fully common restharrow) O. repens, which has pink flowers and oval leaves and is common in chalk grassland and coastal areas. Frequently with distinguishing word.
