Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: rest v.1, -er suffix1.
Etymology: < rest v.1 + -er suffix1.Earlier currency is perhaps shown by the surname Simon le Ristere (1296); however, this is much more likely to represent an error for le Riscere (see rusher n.1).
1. Architecture. A support under an arch in a trussed roof. Also (apparently): a stone that supports a course of masonry. Obsolete.
