释义 | † resten. Brewing. Obsolete. In plural. An annual round of visits by a brewer to the inns, public houses, etc., supplied by him, for stocktaking and monitoring the state of the business. Cf. rest n.3 2b.Recorded in the correspondence between Johnson and Hester Thrale (later Piozzi), wife of the brewer Henry Thrale. ΚΠ 1773 S. Piozzi Lett. to & from Johnson I. 336 (note) When the master brewer goes round to his victuallers once a year, in order to examine..the stock left on the hands of the alehouse-keeper, the expression used in the profession is, ‘that he takes up his restes’; a word borrowed from the French, and means the remainder—‘les restes’.
