Compare Old Occitan restauratiu (14th cent.). With use as noun compare post-classical Latin restaurativum (neuter) substance that renews or restores (14th cent. in a British source), Middle French, French restauratif food, cordial, or medicine which has the effect of restoring health or strength (c1596). Etymology: Apparently < French restauratif (although this sense is not recorded in dictionaries of French), specific use of restauratif restaurative adj.1 after restaurant restaurant n., restaurateur restaurateur n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1933) gives the pronunciation as (restǭ·rătiv) /rɛˈstɔːrətɪv/.
