Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: respond v., -ence suffix; respondent adj.
Etymology: Probably partly < respond v. + -ence suffix and partly < respondent adj. (see -ence suffix), partly after Middle French respondance, respondence response (13th cent. in Old French), guarantee, surety (15th cent.), fact of corresponding, correspondence (15th cent.) and post-classical Latin respondentia correspondence (13th cent. in a British source). Compare also Spanish respondencia (mid 16th cent.), Portuguese respondência (a1575), Italian rispondenza (a1600). Compare earlier response n. and respondency n., and also later respondentia n.With the form respondance compare -ance suffix.
Now rare.
