Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin retributor.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin retributor rewarder (early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < classical Latin retribūt- , past participial stem of retribuere retribute v. + -or -or suffix. Compare French rétributeur (c1420 in Middle French), Catalan retribuïdor (1445), Italian retributore (a1342). Compare earlier retribuer n., retribute v.
A provider of retribution (in various senses); esp. a person or god who exacts retributive justice.
