Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin respiraculum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin respiraculum respiration, breathing (5th cent.), breathing passage, air passage (13th cent. in a British source), breathing apparatus (15th cent.) < classical Latin respīrāre respire v. + -culum -cle suffix. Compare Middle French respiracle breathing passage, air passage (1596 in apparently isolated use).
Obsolete.
An opening or pore that allows breathing to take place; an air passage, a vent.
