Etymology: Probably a variant of respite n., probably by association with respect n. Perhaps compare Anglo-Norman respet (14th cent. in an isolated and uncertain example).
Chiefly Scottish. Obsolete.
Respite; postponement; (sometimes) spec. postponement of legal action, or entitlement to such postponement (cf. respect n. 9). Also: an instance of this.
