Etymology: < respect v. + -ed suffix1.In Shakespeare Measure for Measure (1623) ii. i. 155 ff. the word occurs as a malapropism (by the character Elbow) for suspected, probably not reflecting any more general use in this sense.
Held in respect, esteemed. Frequently preceded by modifying adverb.
