Etymology: < the name of Ralph Douglas Kenneth Reye (1912–78), Australian pathologist, who described the syndrome in 1963 ( Lancet (12 Oct.) 749). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) also gives the pronunciation (rēⁱ) /reɪ/.

In the genitive and attributive, esp. in Reye's syndrome. Designating a potentially fatal disorder which typically occurs in children following a viral illness, esp. influenza or chickenpox, is characterized by vomiting, altered liver function, and encephalopathy, and is associated with the administration of aspirin and other salicylates.
