Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rouet.
Etymology: < French rouet wheel lock of a gun (1555 in Middle French; earlier in other senses, e.g. ‘waterwheel’ (first half of the 13th cent. in Old French as roet ), ‘spinning wheel’ (c1393)) < roue wheel (see row n.3) + -et -et suffix1, with assimilation of the ending to -et suffix1.
Firearms. Obsolete (Scottish in earlier use).
= wheel-lock n. 1; (more generally) a gun lock. Also attributive in rewet work, rewet carbine.
