Etymology: Either < revenge v. + -ment suffix, or < re- prefix + vengement n., after revenge v. Compare Middle French revengement (1528; early 14th cent. in Old French as revanchement ). Compare earlier revengeance n. and revenging n., and later revenge n. Compare also avengement n.
Revenge, retribution; an act or instance of this. Formerly also: †punishment (obsolete).Very common in the 16th and 17th centuries.
