单词 retractible
释义

retractibleadj.

Brit. /rᵻˈtraktəbl/, U.S. /rəˈtræktəb(ə)l/, /riˈtræktəb(ə)l/
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: retract v.1, -ible suffix.
Etymology: < retract v.1 + -ible suffix, perhaps after French rétractible (1766 in Buffon). Compare earlier retractable adj.2, retractibility n.The first edition of the work cited in quot. 1808 at sense 1 gives retractile , as does the original article in 1800 Trans. Linnean Soc. 5 254. It is unclear whether retractible in quot. 1808 at sense 1 shows a substitution of the present word (assuming that it was already current at this date), an alteration of retractile adj.1 after words in -ible suffix, or simply a misprint for retractile.
1. = retractable adj.2 1.
