Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French resiance.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman resiance, Anglo-Norman and Middle French reseance place of residence (c1307 in Old French), the fact of living in a manor (etc.) and fulfilling certain obligations (a1375 or earlier in Anglo-Norman) < reseant resiant adj.: see -ance -ance suffix. Compare post-classical Latin reseantia , reciantia (1319, 15th cent. respectively in British sources). Compare earlier resianty n. Compare also earlier residence n.1
Now rare (chiefly historical in later use).
Formerly: abode, residence. In later use: a place of residence, spec. a type of multiple dwelling in a projected city of the future.
