Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a borrowing from Italian. Probably partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Italian repolone; French repolon.
Etymology: Probably partly < Italian repolone (1590), and partly < French repolon (1611 in Cotgrave; 1559 in Middle French as rapolon ), both ultimately < Spanish repelón (c1500) < repelar to spur, to ruffle ( < re- re- prefix + pelar : see pelador n.) + -ón -oon suffix.
Dressage. Obsolete.
(a) A manoeuvre in which a horse is ridden for a short distance in a straight line, performs a 180-degree turn along a semicircular path, and is ridden back along the same line. Cf. passade n. 1 (b) A 180-degree turn along a semicircular path, esp. one performed in five steps of each foot, with the hindquarters towards the inside of the circle.
