单词 rere-main
释义

rere-mainn.

Forms: late Middle English rere-mayn, late Middle English rere-mayne, late Middle English rere-meyn.
Origin: Probably a borrowing from French. Etymons: French reremein, areremein, arieremain.
Etymology: Probably < Anglo-Norman reremein (adverb) back, backwards (1268 or earlier), variant (with loss of initial a- ) of Anglo-Norman areremein, arieremein, arreremain, etc., Anglo-Norman and Middle French arieremain, Middle French arrieremain (adverb) back, backwards (13th cent.; beginning of the 14th cent. in Old French in specific use designating the direction of a blow dealt with the back of the hand) < arere , arrere , arriere , etc. arrear adv. + main , mein hand (see main n.3). The use as noun denoting a kind of sword blow is apparently not attested in Anglo-Norman, Old French, or Middle French; however, compare Middle French, French arrière-main backhanded stroke in the ball game jeu de paume (1564). Compare later reredemaine n.
Obsolete.
= reredemaine n.
