Origin: Apparently either (i) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from French. Etymons: replevin n.; French replevyr; French replevi, replevyr.
Etymology: Apparently either an alteration of or shortened < replevin n. (although this is first attested slightly later in the sense relevant to sense 1a), or < Anglo-Norman replevyr replevin (a1292 or earlier, rare), use as noun of replevyr , replevir replevy v., or < Anglo-Norman replevi, past participle of replevyr, replevir. Compare later replevy v.
