Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: French replevir ; replevish v., replevy v.
Etymology: Either < Law French replevir replevish v., or an alteration of either replevish v. or replevy v. Compare earlier repleving n.
Law (chiefly U.S. in later use).
1. transitive. To replevy (goods). Formerly also: †to bail (a person in custody) (obsolete). Now historical.In quot. a1644 figurative.
