Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French resistence and its etymon post-classical Latin resistentia: see resistance n. Compare Catalan resistencia (1424), Spanish resistencia (late 14th cent.), Portuguese resistência (15th cent.), Italian resistenza (a1348; also †risistenza , †resistenzia ). Compare later resistance n.Many recent instances of the form resistence appear to be misspellings or typographical errors for resistance n., as shown by the immediate context in such cases as the following:1825 J. Probl. 1800–20 II. 541 When this nascent cone is of minimum resistance, the nascent solid will be also of least resistence; and the surface of the truncated solid of least resistance makes [etc.].1987 J.
