Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish requinto.
Etymology: < Spanish requinto any musical instrument (especially a guitar, drum, or clarinet) which is smaller and higher-pitched than usual (19th cent.), specific sense of requinto a fifth of something which has already had a proportion removed ( < re- re- prefix + quinto : see quint n.1); the intended metaphor is perhaps ‘something higher than something that is already high’.In Spanish requinto is used (usually with specifying adjective) as the name of various different specific types of guitar.
Music.
Chiefly in the music of Spain and Latin America: a small, high-pitched guitar. Also occasionally: a type of small drum producing a high-pitched sound.

1973 Guitar 2 i. 4/1 Gilbert Biberian's Quartetes Nos 1 and 2, both receiving their first performances, used two requintos and two guitars.
1988 P. Manuel Pop. Musics Non-Western World (1990) ii. 40 The bomba barrel drums from which the genre derives its name. Of these, the larger, lower-pitched seguidora provides supporting ostinati.., while the player of the smaller requinto improvises throughout.
2003 L. Carlson in J. Linsky et al. Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar Solos 8 Jeff has written out these particular pieces in guitar-friendly keys, but his requinto is an E♭ instrument, tuned up a minor third.
