Etymology: < French repêchage (1896 with reference to cycling; earlier in sense ‘action of retrieving from water’ (1844)) < repêcher to fish out (1372 in Middle French as repeskier ), to rescue, help (someone) out (1832), to give (an examination candidate) a second chance to pass (1886), to give (a runner-up in a sporting contest) a second chance to reach the final (1896; < re- re- prefix + pêcher to fish (12th cent. in Old French as peschier ), apparently < an unattested post-classical Latin form *piscare , variant of classical Latin piscārī : see piscation n.) + -age -age suffix.
