Etymology: < Middle French repudie repudiation, divorce or legal separation (a1403, in libelle de repudie ) or its etymon classical Latin repudium repudiation or rejection of a prospective wife or husband, act of breaking an engagement, divorce < re- re- prefix + pudēre to make or be ashamed (see pudent adj.) + -ium (see -y suffix4). Compare Old Occitan repudi (1500), Catalan repudi (1460), Spanish repudio (14th cent.), Portuguese repúdio (1600), Italian ripudio (1598). Compare repudy v.
