Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian accordatura.
Etymology: < Italian accordatura fact of being tuned in a certain way (a1642; 1533 in sense ‘action of tuning an instrument’) < accordare to tune (an instrument) (end of the 13th cent.; specific sense development of accordare to be in harmony, to cause (something) to be in harmony with (something else) (beginning of the 13th cent.: see accord v.) + -atura -ature suffix.
Music.
A manner of tuning a stringed instrument; (chiefly) spec. the standard or normal tuning. Cf. scordatura n.
