Etymology: < French reps (1812; 1730 as retz ), perhaps < English ribs , plural of rib n.¹ (compare rib n.¹ 10b and earlier ribbed adj. 2c, although reb is only attested as a variant of rib n.¹ considerably earlier than the earliest attestations of the French word). Compare (perhaps also ultimately < English ribs ) German rips (18th cent.), and also Dutch rips , reps , ribs (19th cent.), Swedish rips , reps , ribs , rebs (early 19th cent.). Compare later rep n.⁶
