Etymology: < renown v. + -er suffix1, in sense 2 after German Renommist (1703; originally in this specific sense in a student context, now chiefly in extended sense ‘boastful or vainglorious person’). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (rĭnɑu·nəɹ) /rɪˈnaʊnə(r)/.
