Etymology: < classical Latin renovātor restorer, in post-classical Latin also (of Christ) Redeemer (8th cent. in a British source) < renovāt- , past participial stem of renovāre renovate v. + -or -or suffix. Compare French rénovateur person who renews or reinvigorates (1660; earlier in specific sense ‘person who renews title deeds’ (1569 in Middle French as renovateur , in a document from Switzerland)), Spanish renovador (c1400), Italian rinnovatore (14th cent.). Compare earlier renewer n.The French original of quot. 1597 has not been traced.
