Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymons: Dutch rhinosterbosch; Afrikaans renosterbos.
Etymology: < South African Dutch rhinosterbosch (apparently 1685; Afrikaans renosterbos) < Dutch rhinoster (Afrikaans renoster ) rhinoceros n. + bosch (Afrikaans bos ) bush n.1 Compare earlier rhinoceros bush n. at rhinoceros n. Compounds 2.The forms in -bush show substitution of bush n.1 for the second element of the Dutch or Afrikaans compound. Compare the following quot., which shows an isolated occurrence of the plural of South African Dutch rhinosterbosje (early 19th cent. or earlier; < rhinosterbosch + -je, diminutive suffix) in an English context:1812 A. Plumptre tr. H. Lichtenstein Trav. S. Afr. I. 73 We found here in abundance a plant which..the colonists call..rhinosterbosjes, because, they say, that in the time when the rhinoceros was an inhabitant of the country, it used to feed very much upon this plant.
South African.
A xerophytic South African shrub, Elytropappus rhinocerotis (family Asteraceae ( Compositae)), which has grey-green stems and foliage, small scale-like leaves, and clusters of purple flowers, and is dominant over wide areas of the Karoo. Also called rhinoceros bush.
