Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French rénitent; Latin renītent-, renītēns.
Etymology: < French rénitent offering physical resistance to pressure or deformation (1555 in Middle French in a medical context), (now regional (Switzerland)) recalcitrant, unwilling, reluctant (1557) or its etymon classical Latin renītent-, renītēns, present participle of renītī renite v. Compare Catalan renitent (15th cent.), Spanish renitente (1491), Italian renitente (a1342). N.E.D. (1906) also gives the pronunciation (rĭnəi·tĕnt) /rɪˈnaɪtənt/.
