Etymology: < classical Latin rēnēs (plural) kidneys (see reins n.) + -in suffix1. In sense 2 after German Renin (R. Tigerstedt 1897, in Compt. rend. 12me Congrès Internat. de Méd. 1897 (1899) II. ii. 29).
1. Medicine. A preparation made from animal kidneys, used in organotherapy. Obsolete. rare.
