Origin: A borrowing from French. Perhaps also partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: French réprimende ; reprimand n.
Etymology: Originally < Middle French, French †réprimende (see reprimand n.), with remodelling of the ending after formations in -ment suffix. In later use perhaps independently re-formed < reprimand n. with similar remodelling of the ending.
Now chiefly U.S.
A reprimand, (now) esp. an official one.

Etymology: < post-classical Latin repriment-, reprimens (1682 in the passage translated in quot. 1684), use as noun of classical Latin repriment-, reprimēns, present participle of reprimere repress v.1 Compare French reprimant remedy that slows the progress of a disease (1645).
Medicine. Obsolete. rare.
A medicine or treatment that suppresses a disease.
