单词 rendzina
释义

rendzinan.

Brit. /rɛn(d)ˈziːnə/, U.S. /rɛn(d)ˈzinə/
Origin: A borrowing from Polish. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from Russian. Perhaps also partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: Polish rędzina; Russian rendzina; German Rendzina.
Etymology: < Polish rędzina (16th–17th cent.; -ędz- is pronounced /endʒ/), cognate with Serbian and Croatian rud curly, Slovene rod rough, further etymology uncertain. Perhaps originally via Russian rendzina (1885 or earlier) and German Rendzina (although this is apparently first attested slightly later: 1914 (in the passage translated in quot. 1927) or earlier; 1850 or earlier as †Redzina). Compare French rendzina (1853 or earlier; < Polish).Compare the following earlier use of Ukrainian rendzina ( < Polish) in a somewhat different sense in an English context:1855 J. B. Horner tr. C. W. Koch Crimea xii. 168 This fertile soil has a peculiar, often very deep, seam, called by the Great Russians, tchernozom (black earth), but by the Little Russians, redzina [Ger. von den Großrussen Tschernosom (Schwarzerde), von den Kleinrussen aber Redzina genannt].
Soil Science.
A fertile, lime-rich soil which occurs typically under grass or open woodland on relatively soft calcareous bedrock (e.g. chalk and some limestones) and has a dark, crumbly, humus-rich surface layer above a softer, pale, calcareous layer formed by the breakdown of the underlying rock.
