Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: re- prefix, nature n.
Etymology: < re- prefix + nature n., after denature v. and perhaps also renatured adj., renaturation n., and French renaturer (1894 or earlier in this sense).
Chiefly Biochemistry.
1. transitive. To restore the nature or properties of (a substance that has been denatured, esp. a protein or nucleic acid). Chiefly in passive.
