Van der Lubbe claimed that he had acted alone, but the Nazis accused the Communists of plotting against the government, and the Communists accused the Nazis of complicity in the fire and of plotting to undermine the Communist Party and seize power (cf. Reichstag trial n.). The matter has remained one of continued historical debate.
