Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymons: German Reichsmarschall, Reichsmarschall des Grossdeutschen Reiches.
Etymology: < German Reichsmarschall (1940 in Reichsmarschall des Grossdeutschen Reiches, literally ‘Marshal of the Greater German Empire’; earlier with reference to the Holy Roman Empire (16th cent.: see note)) < Reichs- , combining form of Reich kingdom, empire (see Reich n.) + Marschall marshal n.German Reichsmarschall as title in the Third Reich was a revival of a disused word, originally a title of the elector of Saxony; compare Middle High German dez rīches marschalk, also ertzmarschalch des heiligen reichs (compare German Reichserzmarschall). In form Reichsmarshal with the second element remodelled after marshal n. Not fully naturalized in English.
The highest-ranking military officer in Nazi Germany.The title was first given by Adolf Hitler to Hermann Göring (1893–1946) in 1940 and was only ever borne by him.
