释义

Reichsbannern.

Brit. /ˈrʌɪxsbanə/, /ˈrʌɪksbanə/, U.S. /ˈraɪksˌbænər/
Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Reichsbanner.
Etymology: < German Reichsbanner (1924 in Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold : see note), specific use of Reichsbanner imperial banner, especially the banner of the Holy Roman Empire, later also used of the official flags of Germany (late 17th cent. or earlier, now historical; compare early modern German des richs panir (probably 15th cent.)) < Reichs- , combining form of Reich kingdom, empire (see Reich n.) + Banner banner n.1The full name of the organization, Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold (see Reichsbanner Black-Red-Gold), refers to the colours of the German revolutionary flag of 1848 and official flag from 1848–66, which had been reintroduced in 1919. The name was chosen as a contrast to the black, white, and red flag of 1867–1918, which was favoured by right-wing groups attempting to overthrow the Weimar Republic. Not fully naturalized in English.
Now historical.
