单词 rehoboth
释义

Rehobothn.

Brit. /ˈriːəbɒθ/, U.S. /ˈriəbɑθ/, South African English /ˈriːəbɒθ/
Forms: 1800s– Rehoboth, 1900s– Reheboth (rare).
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Rehoboth.
Etymology: Originally < Rehoboth (Hebrew Rĕḥōḇōṯ (Genesis 26:22): see below), the name of a well dug by Isaac in the land of Canaan. In sense 2 < Rehoboth, the name of a town, district, and river in Namibia. With sense 2 compare earlier Rehoboth Bastard n. and slightly later Rehoboth Baster n.In the biblical passage, the name of the well is explained as derived < Hebrew rĕḥōḇōṯ, plural of rĕḥōḇ broad open space: ‘And he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land’ (King James Bible, 1611). Rehoboth in Namibia was so named in 1844 by F.H. Kleinschmidt, who set up a mission station in a place previously known in Khoekhoe (Nama) as |Annes, lit. ‘place of smoke’ (with reference to the local hot springs). Rehoboth was abandoned by the Nama in the 1860s and subsequently settled by Basters migrating from the Cape Colony in 1870.
