Origin: Probably a borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian riscontro.
Etymology: Probably < Italian riscontro encounter, meeting, clash, brush (15th cent.), examination, inspection (of accounts, etc.) (16th cent.) ( < riscontrare rescounter v.), with remodelling after re- prefix and counter n.1, encounter n., etc., or (especially in sense 1) after recounter n.1 or rencounter n. Compare Spanish rescuentro encounter, meeting, act of balancing (accounts) (1490, rare; < rescontrar rescounter v., after encuentro encounter, etc.). Compare rescounter v., risconter n.
1. An encounter, meeting, esp. a hostile or competitive one. Cf. recounter n.1 2a, rencounter n. 1. Obsolete.In quot. 1543 as a mass noun.
