Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rescindere.
Etymology: < classical Latin rescindere to remove by cutting, cut away, to tear away, rip off, to split or break open, to cut or tear open, to cancel, revoke, annul < re- re- prefix + scindere to split, divide (see scind v.). Compare Middle French, French rescinder to reduce, cut (a sum, charge, etc.) (1406), to cancel, break (a contract, etc.) (a1466).
