Physics.
Originally: a quantity of ionizing radiation having the same effect on human tissue as one roentgen of X-rays. Later: the dosage in rads multiplied by the relative biological effectiveness of the radiation. Cf. rep n.9The corresponding SI unit is the sievert (Sievert n.). One rem is 10 millisieverts.
