Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rēgius.

Etymology: < classical Latin rēgius of or belonging to a king, royal < rēg- , rēx king (see rex n.¹) + -ius, suffix forming adjectives.The word regius first appears, in connection with the chair of theology at Oxford University, in the University statutes of 1564–5. Public lectureships in Greek, Hebrew, theology, and civil law were founded at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge by Henry VIII prior to 1540 (when a chair of medicine was also established), but only subsequently came to be known as regius professorships. Regius professors of medicine were appointed at the Universities of Glasgow and Dublin in 1637; further subjects were added in the course of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The Universities of St Andrews, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen also have a small number of Regius professorships.
